AirWatch is the preferred method for e-mail access on all smartphones or mobile devices at Michigan Medicine. Click here for enrollment instructions.

The AirWatch Mobile Device Management (MDM) system provides the required encryption and security protocols for mobile device customers to access internal Michigan Medicine resources:

  • Automatic configuration to receive Michigan Medicine Outlook/Exchange email, calendar, and contacts for iPhones/iPads, Android, and Windows Phone 8 devices
  • A user Self-service Portal to self-manage devices in cases of theft, loss, or a forgotten password
  • An enhanced security profile designed to encrypt and ensure proper safeguards for protected information; see the Smartphone/Mobile Device Security Policy Settings and Restrictions section for more information
  • The ability to publish clinical and other business applications to enrolled devices
  • Devices enroll in one of two different profiles: MiChart or UMHS to access recommended applications such as Epic's Haiku/Canto or Cisco's AnyConnect VPN application

Visit the Customer Service Center's AirWatch Device Management System page for even more information on AirWatch. This page requires a Level-2 login and password.
See below for what AirWatch can and cannot do.

Supported Platforms for AirWatch

AirWatch will support the following platforms, including personal laptops:

  • Apple iPhone and iPad devices with iOS version 6.0 and above (preferred devices)
  • Android devices with version 4.0 and above*
Note: For Haiku and Canto access on Android platforms, devices by HTC, Samsung, and LG are required.
    • Due to some manufacturer-specific features, there are limitations for some mobile devices.
    • Nexus and Motorola phones are now compatible with AirWatch, but require a different set of instructions: AirWatch InBox
  • Windows Phone 8.1/10 devices
  • Laptops and desktops running:
    • MacOSX 10.9 or higher (Apple)
    • Windows 7 Ultimate
    • Windows 8.1 Professional
    • Windows 10 Professional

Windows devices must have a Trusted Platform Module (TPM) version 1.2 or above.
This is a hardware requirement to support device encryption on the PC.

Effective April 27, 2017, personal mobile devices without AirWatch will be unable to access the UMHS-8021X wireless network. MWireless will be available for WiFi, but with no access to Health System resources.

We provide enrollment assistance at various locations each week. Click the above link for a schedule and more information.

Overall UMHS and AirWatch Device Monitoring

For security purposes, AirWatch will only monitor activity as follows:

  • If the device experiences "jailbreaking" or "rooting," all UMHS resources (including email) will be blocked until the approved operating system (OS) is reloaded. Jailbreaking (iOS) or rooting (Android) is the process of removing limitations on a device permitting direct access to the OS or installing a non-standard OS on the device.
  • If the passcode or encryption is disabled, all UMHS resources (including email) will be blocked until the security options are re-enabled.
  • If you travel outside the continental United States and your data plan does not cover international travel, your department can notify the carrier (AT&T, Sprint, or Verizon) to adjust the plan to reduce overage costs.

By policy, UMHS will not be monitoring any activity for personally owned devices, except for the following:

  • If the device is compromised or rooted (see above definition).
  • If the installation status of managed applications changes. Managed applications are the applications that UMHS makes available to its workforce. This does NOT include applications that the user downloads from iTunes, App Store, Google Play, etc.
  • If the installation status of specific configuration policies is altered.
  • Device metrics such as the phone's serial number (in the case of theft or loss) - and then only at the specific request of and confirmation by the user.

Data Collection: AirWatch does NOT collect any data related to phone calls, texts, location, or web browsing. These capabilities have been disabled. AirWatch will not have any impact on your personal data. It provides the option of wiping UMHS data from the device since all personal and business-related data are kept separate .

GPS Tracking: Although GPS tracking is available via AirWatch, UMHS cannot actively monitor the location of mobile devices. Only the user may enable GPS if so desired.

Camera and Video Control: AirWatch cannot activate your device's camera/video recorder, but it can push policies to the device to disable the camera if use or business cases warrant such restrictions.

Smartphone/Mobile Device Security Policy Settings and Restrictions

UMHS has implemented the following guidelines to protect personal, corporate and sensitive data. Policies will be enforced once you have activated your device to a service, and prior to any data being downloaded. For example, you will be required to set up a device password prior to your mailbox getting synchronized to your smartphone or mobile device. The UMHS Passcode Security Reqiuirements are as follows:

  • Passcode length = 6 (this could be all numbers or alphanumeric)
  • Passcode history = 13 (each time a passcode is set, the previous thirteen entries are recorded, so a new unique value must be used)
  • Passcode age = 365 days (after which a new passcode must be set)
  • Number of failed login attempts prior to device wipe = 10
  • Auto lock = at least 5 minutes (user can select a more secure value)
  • Grace period before lock = at least 5 minutes (user can select a more secure value)

  • No labels
