"Intelligent Hub" (fomerly 'AirWatch') is the Mobile Device Management (MDM) service that Michigan Medicine provides to enable secure connections to the UMHS-8021X wireless network (for personally owned, mobile devices) and to the MFleet wireless network (for institutionally owned, managed devices) for access to internal resources.

For any device that is not a HITS managed device, enrollment in Intelligent Hub is required to do the following:

  • Access all Outlook/Exchange features such as email, calendar, and contacts
  • Utilize MiChart on a mobile device (Haiku or Canto), or on a personally owned laptop/desktop
  • Enable safeguards against data compromise, malware, ransomware, and the like.
  • Have encryption enforced which is required to join the internal Wi-Fi network

Once enrolled in Intelligent Hub, users may use the Self-service Portal Instructions to self-manage their device in case of theft or to manage the device password.

Personal mobile devices must be enrolled in Intelligent Hub to access the UMHS-8021X wireless network. MWireless will be available for WiFi, but with no access to Michigan Medicine resources. Scroll down for enrollment instructions.


Please please please stop un-enrolling the customer when you have issues. Intelligent Hub manages 21,000+ devices and 60,000 certificates, and Exchange manages 30,000+ accounts and millions of emails, so getting those two systems to talk is a feat....removing the client that does that communication, over and over just creates more issues. Please stop un-enrolling and re-enrolling the BYO devices, seek other solutions before even considering this.

Users are responsible for retaining their own passcodes or encryption keys which are generated when encrypting a device and enrolling in Intelligent Hub:

  • Users typically provide their own passcode for mobile devices (smartphones and tablets). Be sure to keep a record of this as it cannot be recovered by HITS.
  • When you enroll a personal laptop or desktop in Intelligent Hub, the system generates an encryption key. Be sure to keep a record of the encryption key that is generated during the process as this cannot be recovered by HITS. 

Intelligent Hub and Android Devices

Intelligent Hub currently works on HTC/LG/Samsung Android devices running OS 5.0+. Nexus, Motorola, and Google Pixel phones are now compatible with Intelligent Hub, but require a different set of instructions. See the Intelligent Hub Inbox instructions in the table below.

Supported Email Applications

The only supported (HITS) clients are as follows by platform:

Windows: (Core and BYOD)
- Outlook 2016

Mac: (Core and BYOD)
- Outlook 2016

Mobile Devices: (Corp and BYOD)
- Native Email (iOS, Samsung, LG, HTC, Sony)
- Intelligent HubInbox (iOS / Android) (For now)
- Intelligent Hub Boxer (iOS / Android) (Going Forward)

Enrollment Instructions

A device does not need to be on the internal network to be enrolled in Intelligent Hub. A device can be enrolled using any offsite network connection.

Clinical Apps Bundle
Intelligent Hub also includes a list of 11 clinical apps that faculty, staff, and students can download and use. Some require registration, but all are without charge.

After completing enrollment in Intelligent Hub, follow the appropriate instructions form the following list in order to connect to the UMHS-8021X or MFleet wireless networks:

Additional Requirement for Windows Based Devices

Windows devices must have a Trusted Platform Module (TPM) version 1.2 or above (see below). This is a hardware requirement to support device encryption on the PC.

Check if Your Windows Device Has a Trusted Platform Module

  1. Open the Run window by pressing the Win+R keys.
  2. In the provided field, enter devmgmt.msc.
  3. To open Device Manager, click/tap on OK
  4. Look for a Security devices entry as shown in the image.
    • If present, expand the entry open to see if a Trusted Platform Module device is listed with a version number (ex: 1.2).
    • If the mobile device cannot be supported by Intelligent Hub, UMHS email and calendars can still be accessed through a web browser using Outlook Web Access (OWA).

How to Un-Enroll

Once enrolled, a user may choose to unenroll. Access to Michigan Medicine resources with the device ends when unenrollment occurs. The following document provides un-enrollment instructions for both APPLE/iOS and ANDROID devices. These instructions are also found on the last pages of the detailed instructions on how to enroll an iOS, Android, or Windows Phone 8 device.
